Tree of Life

Sitting under the tree

Tree of knowledge

Tree of life

Rest your head

Upon the wood

And think to yourself

Close your eyes

Dream away

Dream away

Faraway from reality

Tree Whisper

I met the trees today

They were whispering

Softly in hushed tones

The wind blowing around

Honing in on my senses

Letting me see the light

Tuning out the noise

Color Your World: Fern

Fuzzy LeavesCuriously alone
These fuzzy green leaves
Akin to a fern

Resting under the tree
A familiar spring sighting
Lush green like envy

Color Your World: Fern

Always Optimistic

Winter TreeJust like the tree
That grows tall and wide
There is always tomorrow
To spread your wings
Always a new branch
To latch onto

  • As a child, who was your favorite relative?
  • If you could be a tree or plant, what would you be?
  • What would be your preference, awake before dawn or awake before noon?
  • Would you like to sleep in a human size nest in a tree or be snuggled in a burrowed spot underground?

The Answers:

1.  My favorite relative was definitely my grandma Norma, who used to look after me all the nights while the girls were out at dance class. She had iced tea, beanie babies, and a big box of toys that I liked to get into. She died in 1999 before I barely got to know her though. – Ann Cantelow Photography

2.  I’d definitely be a tree, so I could see over everything and be the supplier of food for the humans and other animals. Even if they chopped me down, I’d still be reincarnated as paper and glue!

3.  I’m a night owl, so awake before dawn. I like to be alert of all things going on.

4.  My favorite way to sleep is being bundled up in a cozy space, tucked away in a corner, lights down low, so I’d definitely be burrowed in the ground like some hibernating animal. I’d be too out in the open and exposed in a human sized nest, which sounds really absurd.

Daily Prompt: The Power of Touch

Nimble fingers run
Through my breezy hair
Soft and swooped to the side
Brown as coffee beans

The fallen tree’s bark
Rings of mighty age within
Years of weathered beating
One bolt of lightning
Bringing down a warrior
Of the ancient land

Resting my head on
Rough, mossy texture
The shining sun
Shielding my eyes
Staring up at azure
Pillows on a canvas

Trekking through the
Thick maize meadow
Powerlines overhead
Dangerous wind
Ominous and forbidding

A reminder of a nightmare
In which death chased me
And there was no way out
Thrashing through
Tall tangled branches
Evening sun on the way

Textures are everywhere: The rough edges of a stone wall. The smooth innocence of a baby’s cheek. The sense of touch brings back memories for us. What texture is particularly evocative to you?
